Nain Carpets
The city of Nain is located approximately 140km East of Isfahan. The carpets produced in Nain include patterns with a medallion in the middle together with arabesques and floral motifs. Typically, Nain carpets are dyed red, blue, yellow, green or beige on the surface. The carpets usually have a cotton foundation with a soft wool or wool & silk pile. The majority of Nain rugs have at least some silk detail. Quality is measured commonly by the “LAA”, which is a Farsi term referring to the number of threads that make up each fringe (9-LAA, 6-LAA, 4-LAA, 3-LAA are common ones). A Nain with a LAA of 9 is considered a good quality rug (yet is the lowest quality of Nains) while a LAA of 3 is the among the finest. It is possible to check how many “LAA”’s have been used in a carpet by counting the number of threads in one of the fringes of the carpet.
